Brief History of the Car Windshield

In the early days of the automobile and horseless carriages, there was no protection from the weather or road debris for the passengers. Everyone used goggles to protect their eyes. The first windshield, which consisted of two panes of window glass, was used in 1904 but they were prone to shatter on impact and were a hazard for the passengers.
The first laminated glass was found accidentally by Edouard Benedictus in his lab. Others then used this knowledge to improve the strength and integrity of the glass. Carleton Ellis made the first resin laminate, which involved adding a thin layer of polyvinyl butyral in between two layers of glass. The automakers ran with this and started to install them on vehicles, to help protect the passengers from UV rays and road noise.
This led to the automakers then adding tempered auto glass to the side and back car windows. Many vehicles still use this type of glass.
Today's car windshield or auto glass has strict safety standards they must adhere to. The auto glass is now more resilient and transparent, which helps protect the passengers during an auto collision, but despite this windshields can still break from debris at any moment.
